I would recommend against the drawer mechanism. The reason... scalability.
It seems that you are running into that problem now with your current
sorting mechanism. With the drawers you'll quickly find that no drawer is
large enough for certain pieces and other drawers have 4 or 5 pictures on them.
I don't have any mind-shattering solutions but what I have found effective
for me is the simple... clear bins on a shelf approach. This has scaled
nicely from 100,000 bricks a few years ago to my current 500-600,000 bricks.
I just buy cheap utility shelves from Home Depot and even cheaper clear bins
from Wal-Mart. The great thing is the bins are see-through to identify
parts... the shelves can be labeled with categories of bricks and the bins
themselves come in a large variety of sizes.
Of course the biggest problem is the constant shelf-shuffle as you replace
smaller bins with larger ones but a bit of foresight can avoid much of that.
Just one Lego addicts opinion.
