Although there have been many A-wing renditions over the years, I would like to add mine to the list for scrutiny. I dub it the RZ-2 Awing (explanation below.)

My favorite feature of this mock is the ice pick-turned-joystick I used in the cockpit (I don’t know if anyone has done this yet aside from myself):

It fits well into a minifig’s hand while the fig is sitting in the cockpit.

Design Notes:

I dubbed this the RZ-2 Awing; the “2” stands for a second, larger version of the RZ-1. I used a ratio of 1 stud = 30 cm, which is roughly equal to Bruce Lowel’s 1 foot/stud ratio. I originally used my own height (5’ 9’’), converted it to meters, and scaled it to a minifig. Then I made the A-wing proportionately in studs based on the length as given by most tech manuals and websites as 9.6 meters. My version ends up being 28 studs long x 18 studs wide, a little short; counting Bruce’s studs for his version 2.2, I get 32x18 (correct me if I’m wrong). My design aims for play-ability, with retractable landing gear, use of Lego’s access door pieces, and hinged-forward cockpit. Guns also rotate, but not the full 360 due to the edges of the classic space wings I used. I like these for their over-all shape, so I sacrificed a little. Why the RZ-2? Well, after studying the movie pics (of which there are few), I thought the A-wing looked smaller than 9.6 meters. Others agree - see http://www.culttvman.com/olivier_cabourdin_a-wing.html. Comparing the minifig to the ship, I decided to call my version the RZ-2, an A-wing that gives up a little of its agility for beefier armor and shields to protect the pilot with larger engines to compensate for its larger mass. My forward hinging canopy also doesn’t jive with the RZ-1’s rear hinging canopy.

Many thanks to inspiration from Bruce’s designs and others, especially for the notch in front - I think I found the idea for this way back in 1999 on someone’s website.

Comments appreciated!

Merry Christmas,

Bill P.
