Six hours and forty five minutes.

I've just managed to beat that by a few minutes!

The thing is beautiful, and I have six 2x8 plates unused.

Try page 154, step 9.

what an amazing build!

An incredible build, especialy against the clock. You just gotta stay
focused.

A few notes, and Brickshelf pics for those who are interested.

1:00pm - unopened box.

First things first, don't underestimate how long it will take to unpack.
Four smaller boxes within the huge outer box, and then you find some 50
bags.
I scavenged a few old set trays (remember the boxes in the 90's) to sort
into,
then scavenged a couple more, and then some more, and an advent calendar
tray.

1:35 - unpacked, and slightly sorted. Time to start building.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=291895

Where to start. At the end of course. I wanted to get some of the more
unusual parts out of the parts trays and built, so that would be the
engines, Golf balls, display board, RBR, and anything else that caught my
eye as I leafed through the instructions in reverse.

2:45 - 20% built (600+ pieces used), and I'm now ready to start building
proper.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=291896

If only I had known that come page 24, you have to go back and start all
over again.
I could have saved a few minutes building by making twice as many of each of
the subparts.

~4:00 - Superstructure compete.
At this time I was so busy building that I forgot to take a photo.

It's also here that I would recomend a slight modification. Page 29, At the
back, on the bottom, where the extra magnets are attached for supporting the
lower hull. Just 6 studs each side hold the 1x6 technic bricks to the
superstructure, and one of these technic bricks detached itself when I tried
to move my completed model. That's right, the brick detached, not the
magnets. I would recomend adding a 4x6 plate below these bricks to help
spread the load, just like a 4x6 plate is attched to the upper tower on page
39.

5:00 - Lower hull complete.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=291897

I actually found building the hulls to be more of a drag than the repeat x32
greeblies needed for the superstructure. I think it was just the counting
studs across vast expanses of grey plates. Thats not to say the greeblies
were not a drag, just less so.

5:40 - Upper hull complete.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=291898

Thats the bulk of it built, and most of the large plates gone. But just how
many smaller parts does it take to build that bridge?

6:50 - Lower bridge complete.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=291899

It took me over an hour just to do that? There must be more greeblies on the
bridge than there were round the edge of the superstructure!

7:30 - Whole model complete.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=291900
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=291901

Ain't she a beauty?
Remember I started at 1:00pm, not 12:00 noon, so that's 6:30 taken to build
it.
And those few specks below the RBR are all the parts left over. All typical
fare, so I guess I must have built it correctly.

Now we all know the ommision on page 161 where the parts list fails to tell
you that the number of technic half pins required is in fact 22, but has
anyone else noticed that on page 98 it suggests 3 of 2x16 plates, where 2
only are added, and
page 99 it suggests 1 of 2x12 plates, where 2 actually are required, and the
extra 2x16 plate from the previous page appears in its place.

Now I just need to find somewhere to display it, so that my printer and I
can get the desk back.

who wrote rather more than the "few notes" he suggested.
