Any more details on this? Scale? Design? It looks powered, even..Does the ring turn?

Hi Rob, That would be mine... I was so rushed getting everything ready for BF that I didn’t get a chance to put it up on BrickShelf or MOCPages yet, but hope to in the next week or so.

In the meantime, here’s a bit of info about it:
  • About 2.5 feet tall
  • The inner ring is made of 39 4x4 modified tiles linked by hinges (39 per side, so 78 total) - that 4x4 tile determined the overall scale
  • The outer ring includes seven chevrons that all light up (at once, unfortunately, not in sequence - yet)
  • The inner ring spins and dials a random gate address when the touch sensor is activated. It’s driven by a modified RCX (courtesy Bob Kojima) that plugs into a wall outlet, which has two motors hooked up to a treadmill underneath the inner ring
  • The outer ring is composed of two 2x4 plates fastened studs-in by a jumper hooking into a 1x1 Technic brick with holes on two sides (http://www.bricklink.com/P/1/6541.gif), and 1x2 bricks on the inside to present a smooth surface on which the inner ring can rotate
The LEDs are wired and soldered into some bricks to keep them in place. For the next rev of the gate, I would like to find a way to program it so each light comes on after each chevron locks. There also needs to be a DHD built with the touch sensor, and additional scenery added for the gate room. The ultimate addition, of course, would be to have the chevrons move when locking.

The entire thing worked well during the weekend, I was very pleased with its performance. It ran generally very smoothly, and was more stable than one might think.

Even though this was my fourth BrickFest, I hadn’t brought a “real” MOC to any previously, so this was a big thing for me. Given the incredible range of other creations, I was pretty astounded when it won the best Medium Space MOC, and completely blown away when it won best Brick Mod.

Anyway, I hope to have more pictures and details on MOCPages within the next week.

Kelly
