Okay, here's how it works.
I first think of what I'm going to build, for example it could be a mecha or
spaceship or whathaveyou...
Then, I think of the main structural pieces that I will need to make the
design "work", e.g. if I'm building a large aerospace craft, I'll need lotsa
those large, grey SW wings, or if I'm building a mecha, I'll need lotsa hinges.
This will help me decide the "main" colour. Most of the time, it's gonna be
grey or black, for me. This is mostly because my collection is kinda
small/average, and cause I don't buy too many "colourful" sets.
The secondary colour will either represent the weaponry/armour or some other
parts of the overall design. For example, on my MTP, I used dk. grey as
secondary colour because it went well with the grey. So in a way, the
secondary colour also has to match the primary.
Finally, I choose a highlight colour that contrasts heavily with the other
two. Finding the appropriate colour is crucial. In the past, I think I've
messed this up a lot of times.
This is just a quick overview of the process that goes on in my mind.
Sometimes I have to sacrifice certain design elements just so that I can use
the colour scheme I want. Be forewarned, colour blocking/zoning/whatever is
definitely not easy, nor quick (just ask Geordan; he worked on his last
colour-blocked mecha for quite a few weeks). It takes a lot of planning and
revising.
Any more (specific) questions?
