*****backstory follows*****
the GC-5io (General Cargo carrier, revision five, inter-orbital model) isan
older model in sigmatek's line of Medium Freight carriers. unlike "flatbed"
models, the "mule" hauls it's cargo in cylindrical containers, which are
mounted to the vehicle with magnetic clamps. the large panels on the sides
are heat sinks, while the blue plates are emitters for what was the most
powerful commercially available shielding system available at the time.
these are tuned to project the shield around the cargo area, as further
protection against damage. in an emergency, the shields can be re-tuned to
protect the cabin, or be jettisoned altogether.
the Mule is not designed to enter an atmosphere, and would only survive
re-entry with the shields re-tuned, and a great deal of luck. it is instead
designed to haul it's cargo between orbital supply and relay stations.

(I'm rather proud of this model, myself. it started with an idea for using
the cockpit as you see it there. it just sort of grew out of that, as seems
to be the case very often. so, LMKWYT)
