The Starport That Almost Was

Greetings again.

Well, I did tell Kyle Keppler and Tim Courtney that I'd give building a
massive starport a try before the summer was out; this I indicated way back in
March.

It almost made it. Unfortunately, I have to pack up my stuff (even the
LEGO) and move outta here. Unemployment does not pay the rent, particularly
here in Austin...so I'm "going south" as they say to live with the folks for
awhile whilst I seek work.

Please view the final effort at:

     http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=6283

It's a bummer to take it apart when it's not even complete, but them's the
breaks. Looks like the LEGO will be headed to climate-controlled storage with
the furniture for the forseeable future.

     Explanations:

     overall.gif: the big picture.

     sp-02.gif: A closeup

sp-03.gif: The one area that was more or less complete.

sp-04.gif: observation/control tower; er...missing of course any semblance
of control apparatus, such as radar dishes, antennae, etc...couldn't get to the
minor detail in time. Decent observation, I guess.

     sp-05.gif: The "un-built-up" area, showing landing pads 1, 2, and 4. 3 and
5 can be seen way in the background but these are not assembled yet. I had to
remove 3 and 5 to put in the monorail.

sp-06.gif: (from left to right) Relay Tower, Bar, Pilot's Lounge (made
from Millenium Falcon hull), Repulsor Station, and landing pad 1 situated on
top of the power generator.

sp-07.gif: A visitor and his ship (on landing pad 1).

     sp-08.gif: Repulsor Station closeup

sp-09.gif: Pilot's Lounge (minus that little detail, some pilots!!)

     sp-10.gif: Relay Tower

sp-11.gif: Little MO (short for Monorail). A straight track made of twin
1x8 light gray tiles with the car on top; this was before I could afford the
monorail sets (6990 and 6991).

sp-12.gif: Shielded power generator. Actually, the generator is the ship's
engine from my first effort, the nameless Armed Merchant vessel
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=2955)

sp-13.gif: Bar with top removed. The bar was the first structure
constructed for the starport (after Little MO) because everyone should have
priorities.

sp-14.gif: Custom monorail support. Y'know, the monorail sets are great,
but they're not 100% designed to accomodate crater plates. So I just built this
arch to go over the lunar hill. The starport is rife with these, actually.

Anyway, that's all, folks. I'm outta here, I'm history. I will try to
check back as often as I can to see all the neat stuff being built, but the
LEGO and I must part company for now. How I hate unemployment :(  .

Cheers,

Pat
