Did you escape the backslashes in the C string?
CreateFile("\\\\.\\LEGOTOWER1", GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE,
0, 0, OPEN_EXISTING, 0, 0);
Just a thought... it's easy to forget sometimes.
