My friend Jim built one of the models from the RIS 1.5 Constructopaedia in
response to a challenge to build a robot that could withstand and detect a
head-on collision with a wall.  He then modified the design of the front
bumper to use two touch-switches instead of one.  Now, the robot backs up away
from an obstacle if it hits it from one side, and backs up straight when it
hits something head-on.  Examine the photographic evidence at:

I thought he did a really nice job of enhancing the TLC design!  The original
flex-hose bumper works surprisingly well at detecting the orientation of an
obstacle when it has that extra switch to read.  And his design is so compact
that I had a lot of trouble even getting photos of it!

Jim will also be disappointed if I don't point out the crystal ball containing
the faux nervous structure for which this robot is named -- "Ganglion".
