I'm following with great interest the discussion about a new firmware for the
RCX.

When the discussion started, I expressed some opinions about staying as much
compatible as possible with the official firmware. Now, after a second thought,
I realize that the only thing that really matters to me is getting the maximum
out of the RCX. After all I feel at ease with legOS too now, but having a
bytecode interpreter with (almost) the same possibilities would be far better
for most users, including myself. The main problems I see with legOS are the
difficulties in installing the toolchain it needs and the fact you have to
compile and download your program with the "OS" itself.

I'd like to help any project for a new firmware, either JVM based or fully
custom. I must point out that I can give a very limited help with the code, or
no help at all:
- no experience with embedded systems
- no experience with Java
- no experience with H8 processor
- no experience with low level programming
- very limited experience with C/C++
- last time I used assembler was for the 8080A processor :-)

So you could say "what kind of help are you offering":
- the final user's point of view
- a complete testing environment: I have any kind of sensor you can imagine for
the RCX, both original and custom, and two RCX units
- time and effort tor test any temporary version of the firmware
- help with the documentation. This usually takes a lot of time. I could either
write, organize or check the firmware doc (obviously I need a final supervision
about the language as English is not my primary idiom)
- a strong programming experience with other languages, so I do have an idea of
how the things go.
- a lot of good will to install any tool and study any language

If any project starts and any of you project leaders need this kind of help,
let me know.

Mario
