I'm working on a scheme to do that sort of thing.
I propose to use opto-couplers with their LEDs in reverse parallel, connected to
the RCX output, and their transistors driving a power H-bridge powered from a
separate supply. I can't see any other way of using a bidirectional 300mA PWM
signal to control a more powerful H-bridge.
My aim is to use it for trains, with a load of at least 4 train motors (1 Amp)
giving a target rating of 1.5 Amps, but the transistors to be rated
substantially higher to avoid the requirement for heatsinks. I could put the
circuit on each of the three RCX outputs and control 3 trains at once.
The idea would work equally well with a 3 Amp load, as long as you have big
enough power transistors. If it's a car or mobile robot, you'll need to carry a
substantial battery. For trains (or static robots) I can use a big PSU, since
it doesn't need to be carried :-)
