Hi,

That's odd.   I upgraded mine from 1.0 straight to 2.0, and I only paid for
the shipping.  I did not order online, but on the phone.

As far as choosing between Robolab and the RIS software,  it depends upon
the age and motivation of the child. Although both RIS and Robolab are
gui-based, RIS is easier to understand and less intimidating for a
person/child who has never come across the programming concept.  However, if
the child is a motivated and a good self-learner, Robolab is a better
choice.   Otherwise, starting with the RIS software may be more appropriate.

Fyi: If there is any bug, you can report to the Tuft U.,
http://www.ceeo.tufts.edu/robolabatceeo/.     And you may even download free
patches from them.  But not the RIS software.

2cents!

Subject: RCX for Kids: RIS upgrade? Robolab? Other?

I have a Robotics Invention System 1.5 (circa 2000) that I
haven't used for a couple of years now.  My 12 year old
daughter is interested in playing with it. Anyway, I'm trying
to get newer software for her
to use.   I had thought there was a way to upgrade the RIS software
to 2.0, but from a quick visit to lego-shop-at-home it
appears that the software is not distributed in the US (which
I find astonishing).
I've also seen Robolab over at the Pitsco site.  Were this
just for me, I'd go with NQC or one of brickOS, but I'd like
to let my daughter get more experience before I try to teach
her about programming languages.

Anyway, what's the consensus on what are the best software
options these days? For me, the primary criterion is that it
be something that she can do on her own, without adult interference.

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S.  Even though I haven't used the Mindstorms in awhile, I
think it's a great system.  I even wrote an article about it
at http://www.seattlerobotics.org/encoder/200108/using_a_pid.html
It's a little dated, but the underlying concepts still apply.
