USB Range shorter than Serial!?

Since I do the whole web-controllable-rover deal with my bot, it tends
to go quite a distance. I recently purchased a USB tower from Pitsco and
I must say, even WITH the long-range enabled on the control panel, the
Serial tower still beats it. In fact Serial seems to go twice the distance.
My guess would be that the USB port can only supply about 500mA,
mentioned on some site, and the Serial uses a 9v.
Not only that, but the USB tower is actually slower than the Serial as
well, where it should be at LEAST equal, because USB has much faster
data transfer (I say equal because I know that the RCX has a maximum
speed of 2400 baud).

Looks like my $30 was more of a downgrade rather than an upgrade.
For now I'm keeping the Serial for my BricxCC work and the USB for the
WebRCX stuff.

Any pointers on how to make the USB faster or longer-range? Or validate
my statment?
