Hi Chris,
Thanks for the input. This is the kind of information I need. I have
always relied on alcohol as a cleaner for contacts and I did not think of
the effect it might have on the rubber contact. I thought the button might
be a carbon contact. I am also not sure what the material is on the board
that acts as the contact points for the circuit.
Thanks again. I will investigate a source for a special cleaner. I hope
Radio Shack has something as they are about the only electronics store here.

Great page.  :)

I have one point of interest.  When I have used Isopropyl Alcohol (at
99%) to clean the button contacts of tv remote controls, I have found
that the black "rubber" button can degrade and erode.  Maybe someone
with more knowledge of electronics repair can confirm or deny this.   I
have seen a special contact cleaner for just this purpose at a
speciality electronics store.

I can not confirm this with an RCX black rubber button but I thought I
should mention it.   My on/off button is starting to act up and I am
very reluctant to try to wipe it clean.

I do agree that for metal contacts the Isopropyl Alcohol is fine.  I've
used it to clean reel to reel tape heads for years.

Pretend this says something funny
