Can someone confirm that the front panel buttons on the NXT are wired in such a way that it does not work to press two of them at once?

Not too surprising, I suppose, just as early computer keyboards were pre-decoded to signal which single key was being pressed.

This is disappointing, since I wanted to program the built-in left and right buttons to independently control two motors. (I could program the buttons to ‘toggle’ each time they are pressed.)

BTW, in testing this, I also noticed that the state of the NXT front buttons cannot be viewed in NXT-G by selecting a sensor block, as the “real” sensors can.

(...) Confirmed. The arrows and grey button share a common resistor ladder and only one can be detected. But the orange "on" button has an independant circuitry and can be used separately. See keypad schematics in the HDK. Philo (16 years ago, 21-Jan-08, to lugnet.robotics.nxt, FTX)
