Can any body tell me if a 6.6nF capacitor will do to replace the 6.8nF
in the IR Transmission circuit (Fred?) ?.

(...) Yes. Capacitors have typically very loose tolerances anyhow; usually 20% unless you buy specifically selected samples in a tighter tolerance. The 6.8 is a standard value while the 6.6 you have is likely a specially selected non-standard value. (...) (24 years ago, 6-Jul-00, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
