Instead of using the serial port, how about using the HP4**x IR port?
I recall there being HP4**x programs that emulate
IR remote controls which should be easy to modify (?) for
general-purpose communications.

But there are several serial options possible. For example the protocol can be Kermit or (...) (25 years ago, 16-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
