servo motor design

I know that designing your own servo motor is kinda stupid becoz they are
abundant out there. but i'm in a competition which requires us to design our
own gearbox, so i don't see a way out of it.

how do i start? how do i design that feedback loop which will involve a
potentiometer; the gear ratios, etc. please help.

If you are using a Handyboard then what you probably want to do is simulate a servo motor rather than actually go through the effort of building one that behaves like the ones from a hobby shop. As an example, if you had a lego motor driving a gear (...) (25 years ago, 16-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
