Hallo all.
Why don't you us stepper motor driver IC. for example
SAA1027 Philips (uni- polar) or
ucn-5804B Allegro Microsystems (uni-polar) or
L297 SGS-Thomsom (uni and bi-polar)
This will take care of some problems and your handyboard alive!!
