Do you have to choose a transistor that will switch somewhere near and below 9 volts? Cause Fred mentioned that the handyboard is rated for 9V motors. But, does this mean that the pulse generator make 9V square waves?

Yep, I've done just that, and also for relays to drive AC motors. it's a
kludge, but it can work.

Cheers,

Does anyone know if you can do this to the L293D chip to increase the
current?

                         _____- motor +________
                        /                      |
L293D                 |/                       |
motor output__________|                        +
                      |\
                        \->-                baterry
                            |
                            |                  -
                            |                  |
                            |                  |
                            --------------------

The transistor in the center would be a high current one.

Would this work?
