I'd like to hear what you come up with as well.

Presently I just use the magnet/coil sensor pairs that you can buy in any
bike store.  You just hook the shield to ground, and the other wire to,
say, an input-capture pin of a 68HC11, with a 3.3 K pull up (as I
recall).  Remember that you will get two pulses as the magnet passes by
the coil - one when the north pole passes by, and another when the south
pole passes by, so ignore one of the pulses and then measure the time
between the even (or odd) pulses.  The negative going voltages during the
pulses don't seem to hurt the input-capture inputs, but I haven't
computed the energy going into the chip yet.
