For those of you who haven't heard, Motorola is currently offering
a deal on the ColdFire Evaluation board. The board comes with 4Mbytes
of DRAM (in the form of a 1Mx32 SIMM) and 256KB of Flash ROM (two
128KB Flash ROMS), two serial ports, a parallel port, a single
ISA bus slot, and an expansion bus connector. The kit also includes
an ethernet card (for the ISA slot) so that you can download code
to the board via TCP/IP (using the TFTP protocol.)

The software resources consist of a 60 day evaluation license for
pSOS (RTOS), DiabData C/C++ compiler, and SingleStep debugger.

The ColdFire processor is a 68040 core with additional MAC (multiply
and accumulate) instructions that give it some DSP like properties.

The onboard memory can be upgraded to 32Mb of DRAM (8M x 32) and
2MB of EPROM (2 x 27C080).

You can get one of these boards by ordering it from Hamilton Hallmark
(http://www.hh.avnet.com). Look under the "special offers" section
(http://www.hh.avnet.com/marketing/coldfire.html) and call the 800
number. (800-272-2724) Be prepared to wait a bit because this has
been a popular program.

Motorola's description of the Eval board can be found here:
    http://www.mot.com/SPS/HPESD/prod/coldfire/5206eval.html
and the board user's manual can be found here:
    http://www.mot.com/SPS/HPESD/docs/pubs/5206UM.html

Given the ISA slot, it is fairly easy to see how one might get a
quad parallel port ISA card (its a 16 bit slot) and turn this board
into a heck of a robot primary controller.

Needless to say, at least two people in the HBRC have bought one
and Chuck Rice has set up a mailing list to exchange ideas for
using it. Since the tools license is only 60days probably our
first order of business is getting a GCC back end that will work
with this board.
