i'm not one to sell stuff... but i thought you guys might be interested in
this... usb might make this product obsolete, but i'm thinking about getting one

dual r2-232 (duh)
16650 UART
460.8Kbps!!!!!!!!!!!!
ideal for modems, isdn, and terminal adapters
dos, windows, nt, probably linux and sco
isa bus
made in usa

i did a little research on increasing modem speeds and (more importantly for me
and fellow quake players) decreasing latency.. i found that the faster you tell
your modem to go, the smaller your ping times (no suprise there)... the
difference between 57Kbps and 110Kbps was enough to sell me... and, with newer
modems going 57Kbps, it would be crazy to set your serial speeds any lower than
110Kbps...

for most of you guys (being from mit) this is probably kid stuff...

the sources of latency are compression from modems and the actually cable (be it
ever so slight)...

the way you get over the compression is to increase the serial speed (giveing
the modem enough time to compress the info before sending it) or to turn it
off.. compression works in bursts (frames, packets, whatever) of 1k (i think)
and if that 1k isn't filled, the comprssion goes to waste, slows the transfer,
and/or increases the latency.... also, with games or already compressed info
(mpeg, jpeg, zip) the comprssion rarely works...

to get over the cable, get internal... (but you get no lights and if it freezes,
you have to reboot)
