Sriram,
It looks as though the diagram you have is correct. I should
warn you that I have a sonar board in which the cable was put
on backward by Polaroid manufacturing.
There is a manual that you should have for the ranging unit.
In the manual (pg 5) there are details on the pinout of J1.
Anyhow, pin 1 of J1 is marked with a 1 on the top of the ranging
unit by its J1 position. The ribbon cable is staggered in the
manner previously mentioned.
Below is a list of the pins you should concern yourself with...
PIN Function
---- ----------
1 GND
4 INIT
7 ECHO
8 BINH
9 +V
sonar --> HB
7 ==||====
|| to position 7
9 ==||==== of sensor array
1 ==||====
330
4 ---\/\/\---> pin 1 of motor socket (must remove motor drvr chip)
8 -----------> pin 9 of motor socket
WARNING: if you don't have the manual, it clearly states that the unit
should not be pulsed with no transducer present. Damage to the ranging
unit may occur.
I hope this helps. PLease let me know if you have any other questions
or if haven't been clear on anything.

According to the application notes (from polaroid) i've connected the flexible cable to the J1 connector as illustrated (...) (28 years ago, 15-Mar-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
