I've been having problems with the Handy Board being able to go
into download mode.  It seems to work fine without any motor drivers
connected, and with one driver chip plugged into one side of the board,
it also seems to work, but still not properly.  I'm not sure whether
the problem is having cut the trace to drive motors from an independent
supply or using piggybacked 293D chips to allow more current draw - maybe
a combo..

Any suggestions?
