Hi Petteri (et all),
Partial answer to your question is on FAQs at HB www page. Some more info
comes from and old message by Randy Sargent on the HB list. Sorry but no
idea about the E type.

(from FAQs) at

L293D (600mA, it DOES HAVE protection diodes)
The Texas Instruments SN754410NE is a pin-for-pin replacement for the
L293D.
L293B (1000mA, it DOES NOT HAVE protection diodes)
-----------------------------------------
The L293B, while being able to drive 1 amp, needs external protection
diodes (four per motor). The L293D only drives 600 ma, but has protection
diodes built in, which is why people tend to use it instead.
You connect two protection diodes to each of the motor output pins (4 pins,
or 8 diodes, per L293B chip):
MOTOR +

MOTOR GND
In this way the diodes conduct whenever the motor voltage spikes to
voltages higher than MOTOR + or lower than MOTOR GND.
For 6.270, we piggyback a L293D and a L293B, giving us ~ 1.6A, and letting
the L293D's protection diodes take care of everything.
Hope this helps.
