You can interface the Ranger to the HB directly without any problem. Look at the software contributions on the HB home Page undre ther directory of 'kent'.

I found a number of good files here.  We do need to sort them out
though.  We had a mish-mash of either incompletes or code for other
boards.  It looks like we'll be able to get it sorted out.  By the way,
we kept thinking IR sensors were cheapo, but as we dig into the
catalogs, the <$5 sensors have a range of 2-5 millimeters (no good for
collision avoidance) and the sensors we need (200-1000) millimeters go
upwards of $40 a pop.  Does this sound right?

You will also find the necessary connections.
One thing that is a common question here is "What power source do I use?"
You can use the 5V bus of the HB. You should be able to draw power from anywhere on the 5V bus. It appears that the LM??? regulator of the HB can supply the surge 2.5 Amps needed. However, I'm not sure whether this will damage the LM??? in the long run. (???).

We read several times here that the (relatively) huge power surge of the
Polaroid would CTRL-ALT-DEL the Handyboard, so we bought two sets of the
"preferred" battery packs ($37) so Polariod will have its own source.
Each battery mount/holder looks about like a four inch floppy disk, and
the battery slips inside.  We just got them, but haven't tested
Polaroids yet.

(...) I'm currious. How would one go about connecting the "external" battery to the Ranger. For a 5V "high" to be seen by the INIT input, you would have to have a closed loop, right? (28 years ago, 12-Jan-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
