Organized session on Robotic Construction: An Integrated Systems Approach to
Teaching.

The Technical Programs Committee is soliciting papers for presentation on
Robotic Construction: An Integrated Systems Approach to Teaching at the IEEE
SMC Conference.  All papers will be reviewed by up to three referees for
technical merit and content on the basis of an abstract (1 page). The deadline
for submission is February 18th.

Robotics is a medium that allows a comprehensive view of an
integrated-engineered system. It affords a view of information processing from
the microprocessor level of computing up through the application software
level. It provides a picture that illustrates the connection between the
mechanical components of a system and the computing components. It also
provides a focus for different cross-functional teams to contribute different
problem solving perspectives to a project. It embodies all of the essential
components of Cybernetics.

With the development of inexpensive robotic platforms, the use of robotics in
teaching and research has become readily available. More importantly, these
platforms have made the area of robotics accessible to everyone by removing the
need to have a background in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering,
and computer science at the same time. Consequently, this "constructionist"
approach to teaching is being used in various computer science courses, in
engineering disciplines such as industrial engineering design courses,
electrical engineering microprocessor courses, and mechanical engineering
dynamics and control courses, and in cross discipline courses such as
biological computing.

This organized session of SMC 2000 will focus on the use inexpensive robot
platforms for teaching and research. Papers can focus on pedagogical goals,
course curriculum, techniques, methods for developing materials and curriculum,
innovative course applications, and insights from course experiences. This
forum can also be used to present robotics research using these platforms. Of
particular interest are projects that demonstrate how these robotics platforms
can be used to afford undergraduate students the opportunity to do research
oriented projects and projects that demonstrate a cross-disciplinary effort.

Papers accepted for presentation will appear in the Conference Proceedings. All
abstracts must have a cover page containing the title of the paper along with
the names, affiliations, and complete mailing (including electronic mailing)
addresses of all authors, as well as the designated topic area of Robotic
Construction: An Integrated Systems Approach to Teaching.  All correspondence
will be directed to the first named author unless indicated otherwise. Details
