So I guess the question is this: are there other ways to disconnect a
gear train besides the swing arm? Or is there any way to connect or
disconnect a gear based on speed of rotation? Does anyone have any ideas
and/or references for this kind of thing? Does anyone even know what I'm
talking about? :-)

I think you want a gear that engages in only one direction of rotation. It
should disconnect (or idle) when turned the other way.

I haven't thought this all the way through, but I suspect you might be able
to use a pair of differentials. You use one side axle and the differential
body as gears, and the other side axle has a gear on it with a ratchet that
lets it spin freely in one direction, but blocks it in the other. That means
the differenential is a 1:2 gear when spun in one direction, but spins
freely in the other direction. This will be a little noisy as one of the two
ratchets will always "click".

One of the robots in the Mindstorms Constructpedia uses a single
differential with a ratchet to drive straight with the motor going in one
direction, and turn when reversing the motor.

At the risk of boring folks with my mechanical tinkerings... I want to create a transmission such that drivng the input shaft one way gives me very slow rotation on the output, but driving it the other way gives me fast rotation in the opposite (...) (25 years ago, 1-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)
