if any body is still interested in this, check out
http://www.coginst.uwf.edu/lego/bots/geartrains/geartrains.html down near
the bottom for an implementation using two differentials and a locking
clutch to keep them in sync.
Drawback is that all three motor outputs are used up. (or perhaps a small
relay/solenoid that activates when both drive motors are driven in the same
direction.)
The entire LEGO(tm) portion of the site is great for ideas.
