No, while the RCX is in an "off" state, the firmware is maintained via a
trickle current (something like the CMOS registers in an personal computer)
supplied by the batteries. When one removes the batteries, the firmware and
any stored programs are lost.

Doesn't the RCX hold its firmware across the auto power down?  I thought it
did.  That being the case, all you'd have to have done was turn it back on,
no?

I've changed batteries often and have never lost anything. I turn the unit off and swap the batteries quickly. Mike (25 years ago, 19-Oct-99, to lugnet.robotics)
