The (new type) 9V motor can be connected to a sensor input. If it's set as • a
light sensor, it will power the motor (low power, but usable). When the
motor is stalled, its resistance will raise the sensor reading to 100, • thus
doubling as a sensor.
Any idea if this can hurt the RCX?

I don't see how using it as a motor would hurt the sensor input of the RCX,
but the motor must have really poor power output.
I worry about the idea of using the motor as a generator and measuring speed
with it.  I think there are diodes at the input that keep it from going
negative or above the supply voltage.  As a generator, the motor can produce
a voltage or current high enough to do damage to them.  People who have
tried this have reported feeling that the motor shaft only turns freely in
one direction.  That indicates to me that in the other direction a lot of
current is flowing somewhere.

(...) Hmm, that probably means that the clamping diode to +5 or GND is missing, and I'll bet its the one to ground. It also implies that the input resistor to the A/D circuit is between the clamping diode and the A/D input. I could be totally wrong (...) (25 years ago, 19-Aug-99, to lugnet.robotics)
