voiding the warranty, however.

Had the same problem! After disassembling the RCX brick, it became clear, that one of the brackets connecting the outputs from the PCB to the yellow case were bent such that they shortened two outputs, leading to the problem you mention!
I am afraid that the only solution is to disassemble the brick (instructions somewhere on the web) and have a look.
