What happened is the port was told to act as the Light Sensor. Took me a while after I had a simular experance to figure out what exactly was happening. Use VB, NQC, Mindstorm Software, GPB. ....., just assign the port as something else, make a (...) (25 years ago, 18-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)
