I've delt with 3 wire serial connections. Its simpler than I2C because one
wire selects the device on the other end. I2C uses some kind of numeric
code to select a device. Many standard ICs, like 74xxx ones, can be made
to work with 3 wire serial. Some ICs use it directly. Some ICs use I2C
directly, too.

I have a simple setup with a BASIC stamp 2 that uses 4 wires from the
stamp to control up to 8 devices on the serial bus with some help from a
74HC595. It can be easily expanded, but I haven't needed to yet.

Hello ! 1° I'd like to know if anyone has made experimentations with the I2C bus? 2° Is it possible to add more sensors or more motors to the lego RCX? With eventually some hacking (and 'warranty-void-if-removed' technics) it could be very (...) (25 years ago, 15-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)
