Robolab uses the same RCX as Mindstorms - I have one of each and they are
identical (short of the number stamped on the side).

it's awful cool that the robo-lab stuff from pitsco-dacta is available
on-line now.  Just a month or two ago it wasn't.  I imagine they had quite
an influx of folks ordering catalogs for non curricular interestsover the
last year.  Speaking of this, i have noticed that there are quite a few
pieces in the robolab that don't appear in the mindstorms.  What have
robo-lab users found are the most useful of these extra parts?  I haven't
ordered anything from them yet, & can't say that i understand the functions
of some of the stuff (esp. those pneumatic things).  Is thier RCX unit
different from the one in the retail Mindstorms kit?

You need to patch the Mindstorms software to get it to work. There are
two patches that I know of. One is by Dave Hylands, and you can find it
and instructions for using it at:

http://www.enteract.com/~dbaum/lego/macmind/patch_dh.html

But be warned. It is very sloooow under VPC. I'm using it with a 266 G3
and it is barely usable. You can also purchase RoboLab, which runs on
the Mac, from Pitsco/Dacta. You can order it online at

http://www.pitsco-legodacta.com/

I bought RoboLab and use it now while I'm learning nqc. It's better than
the Mindstorms software and only costs $25. But be sure to use it on the
modem port. I tried it on the printer port and it would not work. I'm
not sure how it will work on the powerbook's combined printer/modem
port. It should work, I think.

Hope this helps.

Hi. I noticed that you are using Virtual PC and Mindstorms. Could you
tell me how you got the IR tower to work? I would much rather use my
PowerBook than the crappy old Dell I have to use to work with the RCX.

Thanks a bunch!
