I did something similar; using the little white disks (used as targets in
the CyberSlam sets). I made gradients with markers on typing paper and
rubber cemented them to the little white disks. This let me use two light
sensors to track the position of a joystick (which worked as a remote
control for my phototank). There is a photo at
