I have removed the LED from my light sensor. It turns it into a
different type of device. It turns it into a passive device rather than
an active one.
In a pitch black room, with a white piece of paper with black lines on
it, the device *with* the LED will detect the lines and give different
readings based on the IR bouncing back from the white or black surface.
The device without the LED will give you a constant reading of zero.
So you get a bit better range of light detection by removing the LED
(mostly on the low end), but you lose some other functionality. The
stock part is far more versatile. I'd say only make the modification if
you have an application that really demands it. You'll want to have a
stock one around again at some point.

I think I read someplace that if you remove the red led from the light
sensor it works much better.
Has any one done this and if so how did it work?
