Sorry I don't have any pictures of a jigger.

Basically, what I'm talking about is a crow's-foot lever mounted on a ski. But
not everybody knows
what a crow's foot lever is...

Picture a broad ski with a slot down the middle, running most of the length of
the ski.
Now, a short distance in front of the front end of this slot, a lever is
attached by a hinge or pivot, in
such a way that it can swing through a vertical plane on the ski's long axis. It
is spring-loaded, so
that it stands at rest nearly upright on the ski, leaning back a bit over the
slot. Pulling back on the
top end draws the lever backwards and downwards to a more acute angle over the
slot.
About one-third from the top of this standing lever, another lever is attached
by a hinge or pivot, so
it can also swing in the same vertical plane. At rest, it hangs down almost
vertical, so that the lower
end rests on the ground beneath the slot.
Now, if you pull back on the top of the standing lever, the hanging lever is
pushed against the
ground and the front end of the ski is lifted up off the ground and forwards.
When the lever is
released, the back end of the ski keeps it from sliding backwards, so it falls
down and forwards, while
the hanging lever is dragged forwards in the slot.

This action can be repeated to make the jigger travel forward.  indefinitely, a
bit like a skier using
poles or a kid on a scooter.

Here's a rough ascii-drawing, as the construction would look, seen from the
side:

               /   ->
             /
           /\
         /    \
       /        \
   ---------------
<-

I mention it as a possible alternative to wheels or tracks, so 'bots can make
their way on rough
terrains.

I'd love to hear comments. Anybody experimented with alternative travel
mechanisms?

Thanks
Coilín.

OK! Thanks everybody for the great posts in reply to my queries.

Now here's a tough one for y'all.  (Or maybe not, what do I know.)
Anybody know what a jigger is? I mean, in the context of primitive
mechanical devices?

Nope.  No idea.  Do you have any pictures of one on the weeb?
Instructions on how to make one out of lego?

Later,
Blake.
