If you are doing this in VB you may want to use
Zane Thomas's msghook control...

That's not necessary.  In VB the timer control events aren't low priority
tasks like in VC++.  Even without a doevents stuck in your loop they are
guaranteed to fire.  Your problem is more likely to be, as you suggested,
the IR tower shutdown.
