The gnu-as (gas) I use with egcs was in the binutils-2.9.1 package.
The FSF used to distribute gas separately, but (from the
prep.ai.mit.edu FTP site):

The GNU assembler, gas, has been folded into the Binary Utilities
(binutils) package, as of version 2.5.
