Why not have them do the following experiment?
Use the new 100 speed level.
Connect a rotation sensor.
Loop for power levels in step of 5 from 5 to 100
Wait a little bit for motors to get to steady state speed.
Reset rotation count
Wait 1 second
Log the current rotation point.
Repeat for next speed.
Plot all 20 values.
Repeat above with both 'normal' (coast/float) and 'brake' mode.
I'm not sure how to explain it other than motor characters of power
applied to actual speed is not linear. The same way that if you did a
similar experiment with how far you push the gas pedal on a car vs speed
you'd find it is non-linear.
I can send you the plots of these.
If you happen to have a NXT and RobotC, you can compile and download the
program "Motor Enhanced.c" that is found in the source code for the "Try
Me" programs. It will get installed as a try me program. It will graph
the results of the following two tests on the NXT screen! The NXT motors
exhibit the same characteristics -- speed vs power is pretty linear in
brake mode and not in coast mode.

One of the features of the Optimizer function in Robolab 2.9.2:
Brake the motor between PWM pulses so that you get a linear motor
behavior
(double the number means double the speed)
Could anyone elaborate on this to allow a bunch of high school kids will
understand?
