Various things are different:
1. The selection of parts is a little different. The Educational
version includes Technic lamps and conversion cables for the lamps
and older motors or RCX sensors.
An Education Resource set adds extra parts, including all those in
the retail kit but not in the base education kit.
2. One result of the different set of parts is that the Educational kit
builds all projects around the 3 wheel 'tri-bot'. The retail kit
includes the parts and instructions for the scorpion and walking
robot 'alpha-rex'. The instructions are available on the web.
3. The software is a little different, the Educational software allows
selection of lamps, RCX motors and sensors such as the temperature
sensor.
The conversion cables are on sale from Lego Shop at Home, and the
software update for the retail version is promised this autumn.
