It somewhat defeats it, yes, but it's the only way to gateway things both
ways so that people on one list don't have to sign up on the other list.
The main purpose of the signup process is to stop the From-line abuse that
was happening (you remember that, right? :).  The secondary purpose is to
make sure people have read and accepted the Terms of Use for lugnet.com.

More on the first purpose:  Messages coming in from mailing lists are
converted so that the From line shows the mailing list address as the
originator (which is technically accurate) and uses SMTP comments
(parentheses) to insert the poster's name.  The original From line is then
copied to the Original-From header.  Thus From-line abuse is still very
difficult, (a) because From-lines are changed in the transition from an SMTP
message to an NNTP message, and (b) because mailing lists do a certain
amount of registration filtering themselves.

In terms of the secondary purpose, messages coming from external gateways
may be partially restricted in how they can be republished, since the author
of any given message may not have have explicitly granted a license to
republish the message as outlined in #7 of the Acknowledgement and
Acceptance section of the Terms of Use http://www.lugnet.com/terms/ .
It's really up to the mailing list owner/maintainer to check with the list
participants to make sure no one has a problem with the gatewaying and
subsequent republishing in another place, before forwarding messages along.

In the case of messages coming -from- lugnet.com, all outgoing messages
which were posted directly to lugnet.com newsgroups (not through gateways)
automatically have permission to be republished anywhere (transmitted in any
medium), because this is part of the Terms of Use.  So there is no
possibility whatsoever of copyright problems on outgoing messages.
Copyright legalities on incoming messages are the responsibility of the
sender.

Maybe you should make a subgroup, like lugnet.robotics.something, I don't have any name ideas, but this mailing list can easily overflow in the newsgroup. Also, this defeats the "signup to post" thingy you put on Nick/Ickna (26 years ago, 5-Nov-98, to lugnet.robotics)
