Denis,

I have just launched a collaborative web site for all things to do with Lego
Robotics. The site is at:

http://www.object-arts.com/wiki/html/Lego-Robotics/FrontPage.htm

For more details, you should also see my newsgroup post of the 5th January
entitled "New Collaborative website for Lego Robotics". I thought this might
be an appropriate place to stage your comparison of the various development
systems.

Best regards,
Andy Bower

Subject: RCX program editors

Hi guys, I've been using an RCX programable brick lately, and
maybe the worst part of it is the program editor made available
by the RIS kit.  I've looked on the web, and have found a number
of alternative.  If you don't mind, I call for your help to make
a survey of the available software, along with their strength and
weakness.

I will collect your comments, update, and send again this message
(updated) on RTL and lego-robotics-help@crynwr.com in one week.
If you happended to have used two or more of these editors, your
evaluation (on a scale of 1=poor to 5=excellent) is also welcome.

You can e-mail your evaluation, or post it, but avoid doing the
two things, It will be easier for me to avoid duplicates.
Thanks,
Denis
======================================================================

a) SOFTWARE COMPATIBLE WITH SPIRIT.OCX
Spirit.ocx is the ActiveX library that contains various procedure
to control, send program, exchange information with the RCX Brick.
       a.1-RIS LEGO program editor
This is the standard editor available on the lego CD.
               This editor is visual.
               Pro:
Con: Take too much screen space, is slow, and do
not use all of the available commands.
       a.2-BrickCommand
This editor accept standard SPIRIT.OCX commands, check
for the syntax, and download programs and firmware of
               your choice.
Pro: is SPIRIT compatible, using SPIRIT langage
Con: not fully debugged yet (newer version in progress)
       a.3-Mind Control
This program is mostly a RCX manager.  It cannot
edit program, but can download text file containing
               a SPIRIT-language command file.
Pro: is SPIRIT compatible, using SPIRIT langage
Con: no syntax check at writting time, no comment
allowed.
       a.4-RCX Command Center
This program accept commands written in a language
representing a cross between c and SPIRIT langage.
Pro: Accept symbolic names for variables and tasks.
Con: Does not look like SPIRIT language nor like
c-langage

b) SOFTWARE INTRODUCING THEIR OWN FIRMWARE=OS
To my knowledge, there is only one person that attempted to make
a new operating system to the RCX, in replacement of the previous
firmware (firmwre.lgo) made by lego corp.
       b.1-LegOS
This new OS is used to increase the capabilities of
the brick (in what way it is not clear as of now).
It can be programmed with any compilers properly
               set.
               Pro: ?
               Con: no integrated environment (editor+compiler+
downloader); requires some technical knowledge to
               configure the compiler.
