I came accross an interesting product while looking at some WIFI news today.
This probably has limited use for Lego(TM) robots for three reasons:
A) The unit uses BlueTooth for communications. (no CIR)
B) It would likely be quite expensive.
C) It is activated by a button press; doesn't seem to have a continuous measure
& send mode.
However, with this product:
http://www.bosch-imt.com/dle150connect/en/start/index.htm
you could get a pretty accurate range; fed into a PDA via BlueTooth, then
processed and/or forwarded to the RCX via Commercial IR (CIR) **
With the following specifications, the rangefinder seems pretty accurate:
Range capable: 0.3 m to 150 m
Measurement accuracy: ± 2 mm
Approx. 20,000 individual measurements can be made with one battery set.
With the processing power and memory of the latest PDAs, one could likely handle
a good resolution map and navigation program.
** Not all PDAs support CIR, some have IrDA only.
