Why not use the IR port ? We could build a module (perhaps inside a
5038 9V battery box) that polls a few sensors and sends the result in
short IR messages. Ideally, each such message would contain <box ident>
<sensor number><value>, but it should also be possible to send
messages identical to the RCX message - message 1 when touch sensor 1
opens, 2 when it closes, 3 when sensor 2 opens, etc. This would allow
the expansion module to be used with RCX code and other programming
systems that use lego firmware. Sensors with more than a few output
values are harder, of course. Perhaps you need an extended OS for those.
