Hey all,
Just wanted to let you in on a neat idea. I built a race robot for a
contest, and my opponent built a robot that used three motors, one for
each wheel it had. But it couldn't turn. That was fine for the Drag
Race, but not for the Car Race. I decided to build a robot that ran on
three motors, but could still turn. The result: the Hot Rod. I stumbled
upon an idea for a two-wheeled race robot using a differential gear.
One motor powered each wheel. On each of the drive axles connected to
the wheels, a gear connects the axle to a third motor in the middle.
This motor turns a differential that connects via gears to the main
drive shafts. This means that when the robot turns in place, the
differential doesn't spin, and the bevel gears inside turn. But when the
robot moves forward, the program turns on the third motor which spins
the differential, which in turn spins the wheels.
Just a cool idea.
