The notebook IR ports are IrDA ports.

This is the only program I've ever found that will use a notebook
IrDA port for controlling Consumer IR devices:

Consumer IR is similar to what is used by the RCX.

Subject: Communicating to RCX with Notebook Infrared Port

Hi everybody there,
I'd like to use my notebook's IR port to talk to the RCX. Can anybody
tell how I can do that?
Thanks for our help!

Wolfgang
