If you'd like to save using an output port or external power supply to power
your the sensor, check out Nitin's GP2D12 interface brick at
http://www.mindsensors.com.
He's also posted his circuit diagram.

I bought a few of these last year for a class I was teaching and they worked
fine, though you're limited to about 1 reading/sec due to the relatively low
power output of the RCX active sensor port and the high 30mA power needs of the
sensor.
